Most Companies Say Social Media’s Impact Tough to Measure
Hi Gang, this is not news, its hard to measure things and report on them when you can't collect accurate data since many of the companies won't share their data since they are afraid it will effect their valuation, or profitability. In the movie biz, everyone knows the box office figures cause they are collected by a third party.
Time for the socmedia market to mature a bit, huh, Facebook?

Deluded individualism
This article thoughtfully outlines a struggle with in the 60's generation , however the author naively assumes that it was greed to do one one thing , but in fact it was liberating to the spirit and lead to sex, drugs and rick and roll but also to women's lib, civil rights, the internet, apple , the green movement, etc.

Why indie movies are an endangered species
Hi Gang
Well find here a very good history of the demise of the indie film biz, as we knew it.
But please also keep in mind that 75% of all films released in the US last year were indie films ,and someway they got financed.
Not only that but Indies did pretty well at awards time and Sundance still gets 8000 submissions for 80 slots.
Guess the film makers and audiences didn't get the message yet.
Telluride my favorite film fest coming up , Dr Media says go to the movies
Why Indie Movies Are An Endangered Species
Up until 2008, it was not easy to finance an independent film but, with the right script, stars, and director, the entire budget could be borrowed from banks on the strength of pre-sale agreements. What had made this business model work then was the likelihood the film had of getting meaningful distribution in the US domestic market (which includes Canada). Most of the better financed indie distributors, such as Miramax, New Line, and Paramount Vantage, were owned by the major studios that had bought these companies for, among other reasons, to expand their DVD shelf spaces at WalMart and other retailers. Their willingness to make commitments to distribute movies domestically had a great advantage overseas: it greatly increased the value of pre-sales, since foreign distributors benefitted from the buzz and publicity from an American opening. Indie producers also could rely on domestic market to get a substantial part of their financing. Prior to 1990, they could get over fifty percent of their movie financed based on the value of the domestic market. Even though the value fell as distributors cut their commitments in the 1990s, the domestic market could provide a producer with 20-30 percent of his budget as late as 2007. And with that keystone in place, a producer could get the balance from foreign pre-sales and government subsidies. This formula was not perfect but it allowed indie producers to make such award winning films as The English Patient, Traffic or Babel. In 2008, however, he value of the American market virtually disappeared for the purpose of financing a movie. As one top producer told me in late 2010 ,”it is now zero.”

Porn-Induced Sexual Dysfunction Is a Growing Problem | Psychology Today
Hi Gang
So now the internet is preventing hardons, could it be it has something to do with a lack of jobs, money, etc,,leading to dwindling self confidence and resulting in reduced performance, just a thought.
Porn-Induced Sexual Dysfunction Is a Growing Problem | Psychology Today:
A growing number of young, healthy Internet pornography users are complaining of delayed ejaculation, inability to be turned on by real partners, and sluggish erections.
Lots of guys, 20s or so, can't get it up anymore with a real girl, and they all relate having a serious porn/masturbation habit. Guys will never openly discuss this with friends or co-workers, for fear of getting laughed out of town. But when someone tells their story on a health forum, and there are 50-100 replies from other guys who struggle with the same thing. This is for real.

How to Muddy Your Tracks on the Internet - NYTimes.com
Hi Gang,
Well finally the times , who tracks everything, publishes a rather weak article explaining how everyone else is tracking everything. Think about it everything that you read, touch, visit, say, post, delete all saved for posterity by your ISP, Google, Facebook, etc. All cross referenced, as a way of determining your likes and dislikes. Hmm, how far does this go, political, religious, tastes, sexual preferences, where is the boundary and who sets the rules? congress, the Govt, private companies at the moment , that's who. Is Google evil, well, ask yourself if you mind your private info being shared with eavesdroppers you don't know hired by private companies, to determine your personal tastes so they can track your interests without asking you.
How would you like it if your Boss, or ex did this, or the IRS, or someone you owe money, but wait, they can do this already oops. Welcome to the real Matrix

OVERVIEW
The overall social and emotional climate of social networking sites (SNS) is a very positive one where adult users get personal rewards and satisfactions at far higher levels than they encounter anti-social people or have ill consequences from their encounters. A nationally representative phone survey of American adults finds that:
85% of SNS-using adults say that their experience on the sites is that people are mostly kind, compared with 5% who say people they observe on the sites are mostly unkind and another 5% who say their answer depends on the situation.
68% of SNS users said they had an experience that made them feel good about themselves.
61% had experiences that made them feel closer to another person. (Many said they had both experiences.)

CES: YouTube Predicts 90% of Online Traffic Will Be Video by 2012 - IGN
Hi gang, this gets interesting not do much for the fact that video becomes primary, it all ready is, buy what is being watched.
Is this mostly people sharing with their friends-- probably -- so how many eyeballs will watch scripted entertainment.
All the free YouTube use does is give google more ways to sell targeted ads.
Facebook as well, targeted ads.
Even better in structured data.
Personalization is key.
It's all a matter of taste, matching, recommendation and discovery .

You tube eclipses tv
The remarkable fact that a century of video he's loaded every 10 days means people want to share their world with each other by showing .
From fur balls to Arab springs to your kids viral video, everyone now can share what's important to them .This is an old hippie idea made real, revealing our isolation and desire for connectedness.

Sotheby's year of social tv
http://m.thewrap.com/thewrap/pm_106592/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=9OosLWSV
All tv is inherently social tv.Why, because it essential to a show that people talk about it, share it, in order for it to be successful .
The technology just makes gossip easier, sharing about tv shows--as Oprah can attest to--is gossiping.
The virtual back fence , water cooler, local pub, for a topic , show, to get traction people need to share their opinions about it.
Kids, moms, Dads, the show lives in the minds and emotions of its fans, not on the tube.
Emotional sharing produces likes, and dislikes, influences feelings and advertising.
Personal mythology connects the individual to social myth via sharing about media.

TheWrap.com : Facebook and Twitter, Meet NBC, Fox and Bravo: 2012 Will be the Year of Social TV
Forget about the age of must-see television, 2012 will be the year of must-tweet TV.
Networks large and small are using social media to engage second-screen viewers like never before. A few of the most high-profile recent examples include:
>> Monday, Fox News used Twitter to measure viewer reaction to its GOP debate and encourage online interaction based on the candidates’ answers.
>>NBC partnered with Facebook for its “Meet the Press” debate Jan. 8.
>>VH1 offered a four-hour live stream of analysis during its Critics’ Choice Movie Awards broadcast last week.
“Particularly over the last year, we’ve seen social media grow from just being the latest shiny new toy to being a really powerful tool that is integral to gathering news and telling stories,” Ryan Osborn, senior director of digital media for NBC News, told TheWrap.

Hi Gang,
Heres a very interesting phenomena. Digital pats dropping. I don't mean literally, plenty of that, I mean psychologically. These young people think that the ultimate test of trust is to share passwords. Is is more or less intimate than sex, one wonders. Would you sleep with some one or give them access to your email.
Elife creates interesting moral dilemmas
Young, in Love and Sharing Everything, Including passwords

Alexandra Radford, 20, shared passwords with a boyfriend when she was in high school.
BY MATT RICHTEL
January 17, 2012
Young couples have long signaled their devotion to each other by various means — the gift of a letterman jacket, or an exchange of class rings or ID bracelets. Best friends share locker combinations.
The digital era has given rise to a more intimate custom. It has become fashionable for young people to express their affection for each other by sharing their passwords to e-mail, Facebook and other accounts. Boyfriends and girlfriends sometimes even create identical passwords, and let each other read their private e-mails and texts.
