Google: don't expect privacy when sending to Gmail | Technology | The Guardian

Well isn't this surprising, you mean you get a free service and they can't farm your mail to help make their engines smarter, and of course they would never sell this data to the feds, or any government, or political pasty  for that matter would they, nah!
We are all working for Google for free. Facebook as well, wake up folks.

Slated .com and indie financing

As indie film financing shifts to new studio models, amazon, app, apple, YouTube , netflicks, etc, now we have crowdfunding and a new curated model , slated .com.
Not the 1st and certainly not to be the last .
Will this new model provide more financing opportunities for quality films, while the studios sit on their hands and indie film makers chase money where ever they can.
Why invest in film when software and web plays offer a better upside.
Good question .
Of course where will quality indie films come from if they can't be financed ?
Will there be more Fruitvale stations or Beasts of the southern wild, yes, but one a year?
Risky business as we all know, now more so, interesting as need fir product grows capital to finance it deminishes, nuts huh?

Disruptions: Hollywood, or Silicon Valley: Where's the Money? - NYTimes.com

Hi all, been a while I keep posting on LinkedIn and Facebook as well as tweeting but I thoght I'd try this, although tumblr is next.
This article outlines what I've been preaching for years which is the need for transmedia projects as the future of media making.Indie movies of high quality and schlock movies will always have a place to go but the budgets will be lower because VOD which where everything will go , won't pay as much.
See Fruitvale Station as an example  of an indie film which got made and will do some business.
The money, the money is in silliwood which is not what is discussed here. This is not an either or but a both and situation. People want scripted entertainment, silicon valley creates platform, ni=ot stories, its stories that sell, that requires writers not MBA's.
Stay tuned for the new creativity revolution.Silliwood 1.0.

Solving Equation of a Hit Film Script, With Data - NYTimes.com

Hi Gang, haven't been blogging , tweeting, etc., but felt I needed to comment on this piece.
Bruzzese is the 2nd coming of Joe Farrell and NRG. You see the reason he's popular is because he can fill a theater and create data sheets which sound scientific but really aren't.
His assessment of the film based on extrapolation from arbitrary questions which have no foundation in anything give a level of comfort to studio execs.
There are real ways to evaluate movies which is based on psycho-graphics and sampling technologies.
Mr Bruzzese has taken the advantage the of the shift in the industry. The studios are smart to consult with researchers,, they need better data.I can do that.

That gut feeling

This article offers an interesting view of the empirical foundations of the felt sense we have when we feel moved by a presentation or person or idea .
Gendlin researched this idea many years ago and it has been foundational in my work .
Now we have a scientific basis which offers further support for this model. The gut feeling is what lets you know you're emotionally engaged.

Super search engine tracks terrorists — and you — via social networks - Technology on NBCNews.com

During the Bush years this was the Total Awareness Network, TAN, and was supposedly unfunded.
Guess it was privatized, but isn't Raytheon a defense contractor. RIOT what a good name?
These techies have a sense of humor. All it does is scoop up info and sort out the terrorists , kind of like fishing for Tuna and catching Dolphins, that works well too.
Sounds harmless Rapid Information Overlay Technology (RIOT),just a new technogame right!

Film is a disease -Capra

Capra sums it up, could say this about all media

"Film is a disease. When it infects your bloodstream, it takes over as the number one hormone; it bosses the enzymes; directs the pineal gland; plays Iago to your psyche. As with heroin, the antidote to film is more film." - F. Capra

Most Companies Say Social Media’s Impact Tough to Measure

Hi Gang, this is not news, its hard to measure things and report on them  when you can't collect accurate data since many of the companies won't share their data since they are afraid it will effect their valuation, or profitability. In the movie biz, everyone knows the box office figures cause they are collected by a third party.
Time for the socmedia market to mature a bit, huh, Facebook?

Deluded individualism

This article thoughtfully outlines a struggle with in the 60's generation , however the author naively assumes that it was greed to do one one thing , but in fact it was liberating to the spirit and lead to sex, drugs and rick and roll but also to women's lib, civil rights, the internet, apple , the green movement, etc.
Lively up yourself!

Why indie movies are an endangered species

Hi Gang
Well find here a very good history of the demise of the indie film biz, as we knew it.
But please also keep in mind that 75% of all films released in the US last year were indie films ,and someway they got financed.
Not only that but Indies did pretty well at awards time and Sundance still gets 8000 submissions for 80 slots.
Guess the film makers and audiences didn't get the message yet.
Telluride my favorite film fest coming up , Dr Media says go to the movies

Why Indie Movies Are An Endangered Species

Up until 2008, it was not easy to finance an independent film but, with the right script, stars, and director, the entire budget could be borrowed from banks on the strength of pre-sale agreements. What had made this business model work then was the likelihood the film had of getting meaningful distribution in the US domestic market (which includes Canada). Most of the better financed indie distributors, such as Miramax, New Line, and Paramount Vantage, were owned by the major studios that had bought these companies for, among other reasons, to expand their DVD shelf spaces at WalMart and other retailers. Their willingness to make commitments to distribute movies domestically had a great advantage overseas: it greatly increased the value of pre-sales, since foreign distributors benefitted from the buzz and publicity from an American opening. Indie producers also could rely on domestic market to get a substantial part of their financing. Prior to 1990, they could get over fifty percent of their movie financed based on the value of the domestic market. Even though the value fell as distributors cut their commitments in the 1990s, the domestic market could provide a producer with 20-30 percent of his budget as late as 2007. And with that keystone in place, a producer could get the balance from foreign pre-sales and government subsidies. This formula was not perfect but it allowed indie producers to make such award winning films as The English Patient, Traffic or Babel. In 2008, however, he value of the American market virtually disappeared for the purpose of financing a movie. As one top producer told me in late 2010 ,”it is now zero.”

WGA Screenwriter Survey: Scripters’ Status “Significantly Deteriorated”

Hi Gang here's a article by Finke at deadline.com, which states clearly the state of the creative types in Hollywood .
I can confirm this from my interviews with award winning writer/directors .
Indie production is becoming the rule not the exception .
Let's follow indiegogo , etc, crowdfunding , aol, apple, amazon, netflicks, all new studios for lower budget high quality films which studios won't touch .
With 3b people on line, 24/7, all on vod, content will really be king, good quality content in a transmedia world.
Stay tuned!

EXCLUSIVE… FINDINGS INCLUDED: The major findings of the newly released 2011 WGA Screenwriter Survey (click here for full report) are that “screenwriters believe their status in the industry has significantly deteriorated over the past several years. The most flagrant studio practices contributing to this decline, ranked in order of frequency, are: free rewrites, sweepstakes pitching or bake-offs, late payment, free prewrites, and idea theft.” The Writers Guild findings included:
